Narrowed focus the key to success says Grove

Bournville Head Coach Alex Grove says that the focus is immediate rather than on the longer-term objective of winning the Regional One Midlands title as the side enters the final month of the season.

A 33-12 bonus point win in the mud at Lichfield last Saturday coupled with a home defeat for second-placed Newport at the hands of Stourbridge helped Bournville to establish an eight points lead at the top of the table with four matches to go.

Lutterworth, who Bournville beat by a point in November, are the first-time visitors to Avery Fields this weekend and, after a week off, Bourns will then face a tricky trip To Banbury on March 21 and a potential title decider against Newport at home on March 28.

But Grove is looking no further than this weekend’s game having identified narrowing the players’ focus as one of the reasons behind successive away wins at Drybrook and Lichfield.

“The guys are realising that you can only focus on one thing at a time and when you heighten that focus it does play dividends,” Grove said.

“At Drybrook we were very clear in our communication as to how we were going to approach that game, which was to focus on our defence. It was the same at Lichfield and every week the guys are realising the importance of delivering on X and Y and not thinking about A,B, C as well and a number of different aspects of the game.

“If you can hone that focus into one or two things we will come out on top.

“Our kicking game and our defence have been outstanding in the last couple of weeks. We are a side that is generally going to score tries and we often forget about defence.

“The last two weeks we have made the focus our defence and our tries have come off the back of that. We have scored ten tries in those games.

“The Newent game was a huge wake-up and even against Dudley Kingswinford. We were the better side and won well but there was still a spell there where we conceded three tries in the first-half.

“It’s an area we have identified that we needed to tighten up. We have responded and it’s important to recognise that the lads have responded in the way they have.”

Bournville also hope that wing Nathan Decalmer will be fit to face Lutterworth having missed the last two matches with a knee injury which he sustained against DK.

Scrum-half Reiss Price is also in contention for a return having taken a knock in training which forced him to sit out the Lichfield win, the first match he has missed this season.
