Improved accuracy the key to having fun says Grove

Improved accuracy allowed Bournville to have some fun and round off their Regional One Midlands season with a 72-0 win against basement club Nuneaton at Liberty Way.

It was one-way traffic as Bourns rattled in 12 tries in a dominant display despite testing weather conditions which included a combination of sunshine, hail, rain and a strong wind.

“I asked the lads what they wanted to get out of today and they said they wanted to enjoy it and have some fun,” said Head Coach Alex Grove.

“I also wanted them to do that against Newport two weeks ago but we weren’t able to do that because we were so inaccurate.

“So we said that if we were going to have some fun today we had to be accurate with the ball and we were. We obviously scored a lot of points and some of those came easier and some we had to work a bit harder for. But we were accurate and it was pleasing to do a thorough job.

“With the wind and hail that came down just before the end, we could have used those as excuses not to play any rugby and excuse knock-ons and handling errors but there weren’t many of those, so that was the most pleasing thing today, we were quite tidy with the ball.

“We were also good in defence. I thought Nuneaton might score a couple of tries through an interception or a handling error, but they didn’t do that and we defended well when they got into our 22.”

Bourns also had to deal with a late reshuffle with the withdrawal of centre Henry Harper which meant Joe Jenkins had to switch from full-back with Rhys Williams Goldman promoted from the bench and Reiss Price called up from the second XV to take his place on the bench.

“It might not have been ideal but we have good backs who are skilful ball payers who are able to play across the backline,” Grove said.

“All of our backs know every play from different positions on the pitch so it’s a case of: can we catch and pass and run those lines which we did very well today.”

Although Bourns now have a break before they pre-season starts in late June ahead of the return to the National Leagues, the Blues still have two matches to play in Counties Two Midlands West (East), successive home matches against Lutterworth IIs the Berkswell & Balsall on the next two Saturdays.
