Bournville Head Coach Alex Grove was excited by the potential of wing Eugene Madzima who marked his senior debut with a brace of tries in the 72-0 victory over Nuneaton in the Regional One Midlands finale at Liberty Way.
Madzima is a product of the Player Pathway Programme at Avery Fields who also scored two tries for Bournville Blues on his second debut against Upton on Severn earlier this season. Having impress in subsequent matches for the Blues in Counties Two Midlands West (East), Madzima was given his first team chance and he grabbed it with both hands.
In addition to scoring two tries, Madzima caused plenty of problems for Nuneaton’s defence with his strength and pace which hinted at exciting – if raw – potential from the teenager.
“With his first touch of the ball Eugene beat half a dozen defenders. He’s got a lot of pace and he’s very raw but I think he’s a proper talent,” Grove said.
“To have Eugene and Oscar Fawkes-Underwood, who have both come through the junior and Colts system, playing today is really pleasing. They have both taken their opportunities.
“I’m looking forward to seeing a bit more of Eugene next season. We’ve seen what he can do in training in the first team environment and in the Blues he has got even more space to play with.
“He’s a proper player. He can play on the wing or at 13 so we are quite excited about him.”
Saturday’s whopping win included 12 tries, half of them scored by scrum-half Adam Collingwood and wing Mikey Ho who got a hat-trick apiece.
“I am pleased that Adam got a start at nine because that’s probably his preferred position. But he’s had a utility role this season and played at wing, centre and scrum-half and he’s never let us down. He’s been hugely valuable for us this season,” Grove said
“Mikey does that every year for us so that’s less of an unknown. But I’m pleased they both got hat-tricks and particularly for Adam who has been brilliant all season.”
