Bourns battle but league leaders bank the points

Camborne 52 Bournville 5

This always looked like being a tough away assignment for Bournville and so it proved as Camborne demonstrated why they are red-hot favourites for promotion.

Last season Bournville returned from The Rec with two bonus points but Camborne, bolstered by some significant signings, are a different side this season.

The Cornishmen are unbeaten at home and Bournville have yet to win away and the match went exactly as the form book suggested with Camborne playing a no-frills pragmatic game and Bourns, committed to the last, trying hard to find ways to break down the home defence.

In the end all Bournville had to show for their efforts was a 66th minute try from back-row forward Kieran Henderson – his first since he joined from Sutton Coldfield last summer – but at that stage Camborne were 45 points up.

So Bournville made the long trek home without a point and are now just three points clear of Macclesfield who took a losing bonus point from their home match against Clifton.

The positives for Bournville were a 50th appearance for centre Sam Grimshaw and a debut for George Jewell, a recent arrival from Old Patesians, who came off the bench early in the second-half.

But there were injury concerns too with James Weaver (rib) and Adam Shaw (rotator cuff) both forced off.

Bourns have a week off before they travel to Hinckley on March 1 which will give the opportunity for the medical staff to try to reduce a growing casualty list.

For the record, Camborne’s tries came from full-back Kyle Moyle (two), wing Alex Ducker, hooker Ben Priddey and loosehead prop Jack Andrew in the first-half.

Wing Harry Larkins grabbed a brace in the third quarter and number eight Aden Brassington went over for the eighth late on with Moyle adding six conversions for a personal haul of 22 points.

*Bournville Blues moved to second in the Counties Three Midlands West (South) table with a 33-18 victory over Old Yardleians at Avery Fields.

The win avenged a defeat at Tilehouse Lane earlier in the season and moved the Blues to within two points of new leaders Upton on Severn. Previous leaders Woodrush went down 15-8 at Dudley Kingswinford IIs.

Skipper Joe Nellany, back-row forwards Ben Harper and Will Taylor and centre Jack Mitchell crossed for tries with fly-half Alex Warner kicking 13 points.
