Bournville centre Sam Grimshaw believes “the sky’s the limit” for the side after showing their quality by beating Exeter University in their last National Two West outing.
The players returned to training at Avery Fields on Tuesday evening after enjoying a well-earned week-off to start their preparations for the return to action against bottom-of-the-table Newport at Forton Road on November 4.
The 34-31 win against the Exeter students – who were second before they arrived at Avery Fields – gave the squad a lift after a number of near-misses in the previous month.
Although the win was only the second of the season, Bournville secured at least a bonus point in six of their first seven matches, a haul that has helped to take them to tenth place with 16 points.
“The start of the season has been very interesting to say the least, we are starting to become really tight as a unit on the pitch and the result against Exeter at the end of the first block really showed that as we got very unlucky in a few results before that game,” Grimshaw said.
“In terms of aspirations we just want to keep building as a unit and I really think the sky’s the limit with this team as we have the talent to put some really good results together when we are back after the two-week break.”
Grimshaw’s 67th minute interception try helped Bournville to secure a bonus point win against Exeter University and was his fourth of the season.
Full-back Owen Williams has also scored four tries – including a brace against Exeter – and he also that result has set Bournville up nicely for the resumption of the league campaign.
“Even though the results don’t reflect it, I do think we have performed well in the majority of games with us missing out on three wins by fewer than five points in those games.,” he said.
“There are a number of new faces in the squad this year and, as a whole, I think we are a better, more skilled squad compared to last year. We just need to learn how to win those tough, close games.
“I think this will come with experience and also confidence after we get a couple of wins over the line.
“This made the recent win against Exeter University all that sweeter as they have started the season really well and this will hopefully help us to kick on against Newport which will be a really tough place to go after the break.”
