Head Coach Matt Price wants the players to improve their accuracy to help drive Bournville up the National League Two West table in the second half of the season.
Bournville ended 2023 11th in the table, two places and nine points above the relegation zone but only ten adrift of eighth place Chester.
Although Bournville have yet to win away from home this season, they have often collected valuable bonus points on the road and have averaged a bonus point a match from the first 14 games.
With seven of the remaining 12 matches at Avery Fields – starting with the visit of Old Redcliffians on January 13 – Bournville have the opportunity to add to their tally of three wins.
“We will enjoy the three-week break over Christmas with our families but we have to come back with the mindset that we have got to execute at a higher level if we want to compete in this league,” Price said.
“This has been a learning period. It’s a new group together and a good percentage of that group are new to this club.
“It’s a new coaching group with new ideas, new thoughts and processes from us into them. Hopefully we have learned about what we all want to collectively work towards which is wins and quality rugby.
“We are just looking for more accuracy in the second half of the season.
“If we get our performance right then the wins will come. If we get our performance right teams will not be able to compete with us like Hornets could not compete with us in our last home game.
“But we didn’t get that to those levels against Dudley Kingswinford. They competed and nudged us out.
“There is almost three leagues in this league. There’s the bottom four which, unfortunately we are in, there’s a middle bit and then there’s the top boys from seventh upwards.
“So, we have got to try and get into the middle third. That’s where we have got to be.
“If we get the performance right and we get back to those levels of accuracy then we will be challenging for it.”
The break from rugby over the festive period should also give time for injured players to return to action.
Number eight Jonjo Fanning was ruled out of the DK match by illness and tighthead prop Stefan Thorp limped off in that match with a knee injury.
Prop James Weaver and scrum-half Billy McDonough have also been on the casualty list in recent weeks along with Ben O’Sullivan who broke an arm against Hornets and hooker Jake Bailey who also has an arm injury.
