Head Coach Matt Price has praised Bournville’s pair of pocket rockets, Nathan Decalmer and Alex Evans, for the impact they have made in their first season at Avery Fields.
What the two wings lack in height they more than make up for in pace, power and elusive running and have quickly formed an effective strikeforce despite having no previous experience of National Leagues rugby.
Decalmer made the significant step up from Telford Hornets, who play at level eight in the league structure, last summer and Evans from Manchester-based Burnage in Regional One North West.
The pair have scored 22 tries between them so far this season with Decalmer’s hat-trick against Newport last Saturday taking his tally to 16.
With six matches left to play this season, Decalmer is fourth in the National Two West try-scoring charts, just five behind the leader, Camborne hooker Ben Priddey.
“Both our wingers are so raw. They are little pocket rockets, they have no fear, their skills at this level are superb,” Price said.
“They are superb open-field runners but also now their defensive plays and how they read and understand the game are growing as well.
“We are very lucky to have them and we are looking forward to having them next season as well.
“There is no substitute for speed is there? Unfortunately I never had it so I had to resort to violence!
“Both of them are just great wingers. Nathan is now up to 16 this season, 21 is the top. It’s not something he has spoken about, but it’s something I have spoken about it with him.
“If we can get them up near the top then it would be great.”
The leading try-scorer in the top five levels of the English leagues this season is Esher wing James Botterill who has scored 22 so far in their National Two East campaign.
