Head Coach Matt Price was delighted with the result if not all aspects of the performance as Bournville got back to winning ways against Hinckley at Avery Fields.
Bournville produced a performance of two distinct halves – error-prone in the first but more clinical in the second – to earn a 27-19 victory which came after a half-time ‘pep talk’ from Price.
“I am not going to lie, at half-time there were a few choice words and there were questions of the boys about what we wanted to get out of the game,” Price said.
“It’s great that we keep creating chances but, ultimately, we have to convert them. If we aren’t going to take them we are going to get punished.
“I thought it was a clunky game by both sides but when you play clunky and you get a win, fair play, that is what we wanted.
“I thought the scrums were bang on today. Hinckley are probably the best scrummaging side we have come up against and it was a proper contest.
“At the lineout we let them off the hook a couple of times but they did to us. It was just one of those games of who could convert their chances. Both sides had them.
“I was just happy that we came out in the second-half and converted what we had asked them to do.”
The win came after Bournville surrendered their unbeaten home record to league leaders Camborne last week and gave them a record of played eight, won four, lost four going into a week’s break.
“The win was important especially going into a break. The last thing you want is not winning and having that in the back of your head for a week and a bit,” Price said.
“I am glad the boys stuck in got the win. We move forward and can have a nice break. We need a break because it’s been a long slog of 12 weeks with pre-season.”
There was added satisfaction for Price in the victory as it came against a Hinckley side now coached by his former Bedford team-mate Emyr Lewis, who took charge of the Leicestershire club during the summer.
“Emyr is a good lad, but I haven’t seen him for a few years. He was a full-back while I was at the coal face at Bedford,” Price said.
“I am chuffed to get one over him but it’s good to see him and boys like him with a good rugby brain in the game. We need to keep people like him in the game.”
