GOLDS NEWS: FRAG SNAGS RFU CAP

Victoria ‘Frag’ Clifford, Chair of Bournville Women’s section, has received a special commemorative cap to mark her pioneering role in the early development of women’s rugby in England.

The cap recognises Frag’s appearances for the Midlands East representative side while she was playing club rugby for Leicester before moving to Birmingham.

The caps have been awarded as part of initiative by Gill Burns, England’s Women’s Rugby World Cup-winning captain of 1994, to recognise those who played representative or divisional rugby and had to pay for the privilege before the women’s game was funded by the RFU.

Frag was one of those pioneers and is now the proud owner of a black with silver piped cap with the Red Rose of England and Midlands East embroidered on the front.

“I’m delighted to be acknowledged by the RFU with the presentation of this cap,” Frag said.

“The women’s game has grown substantially since the early 2000s and it’s great to see women’s rugby now thriving.”

Having joined Bournville from Moseley, Frag captained the women’s team and still plays in the back-row in the side that is currently joint top of Women’s NC Two Midlands (West).

Frag’s family are very much part of the Bournville family as her daughter plays for the Under-9s for which she is the joint head coach, her son for the Under-11s and her husband is one of the coaches of the Under-11s.
