Bournville Forwards Coach CJ Osazuwa was happy but frustrated after the 55-24 Regional One Midlands victory over first-time visitors Lutterworth at Avery Fields.
Osazuwa was delighted that Bourns extended their unbeaten home record this season to ten matches and ran in eight tries in another comfortable bonus point victory which maintained an eight points lead over Newport at the top of the table.
Bourns produced some scintillating rugby in patches but were also guilty of failing to convert territory and possession into more points by forcing the game at times and conceding four tries which allowed Lutterworth to return to Leicestershire with a bonus point.
“I might sound like a miserable so-and-so because I feel really frustrated,” Osazuwa said.
“The boys played such good rugby at times when we went through the phases. But I felt that impatience killed us at times, lots of dropped balls, lots of needless off-loads especially in the first-half.
“But we got five points, we scored 55 points and eight tries. The only way that I could really have said that could have been better was if we could have kept them to seven or 14 points which would not have flattered us. So, I’m frustrated but happy.
“I think we have proven this year that when we play better when there is some jeopardy. If you look at the matches where we have played our best it’s when there have been equal teams and our backs to the wall.
“Again today we played our best rugby when we had our backs to the wall. We probably didn’t show the best version of ourselves. When we watch the video back there were many times when we got to five, six, seven, eight phases with some quality rugby.
“We normally get better as the phase count gets higher but we just did some stupid and silly things at times today.
“It’s still an eight out of ten performance in terms of the scoreline and match points but there was also some needless sloppiness.”
Bourns have a week off before the head down the M40 to face Banbury on March 21 before they return to Avery Fields to take on Newport in the likely title decider on March 28.
“We came into this match eight points clear. We are still eight points clear and we have got a maximum of 20 points from our last four games,” Osazuwa said.
“At this stage of the season bodies are broken and there’s inconsistency but our consistency has been great. Our only defeat in our last 14 games was at Newent so you can’t ask for much more than that can you?”
