Bournville have appointed lock Ben Meakin as the new first team captain for the 2024/25 National Two West season and re-appointed hooker James Weaver as club captain.
Meakin arrived from Stourbridge 12 months ago and played almost every minute of every games in his first season at Avery Fields. He takes over the captaincy from back-row forward Chris Idehen.
“Ben is a leader by actions and will continue to do that this season,” said Bournville Head Coach Matt Price.
“He has a leadership group around him to support throughout and he will grow well into the role.
“We also thank Chris Idehen who captained us superbly last season. Chris’s approach to his training and his general work rate is top drawer and he will continue to play a significant role within the wider leadership group.”
Meakin, who played representative rugby for Midlands Under-18s when he was at Old Swinford Hospital School, is looking forward to leading out Bournville who achieved the club’s highest-ever league placing last season.
“I’m delighted to be named captain at Bournville for this season,” he said.
“We have a great group of players and leaders amongst the squad as well as some fresh faces who will add a wealth of talent and experience.
“Pre-season is going very well and I, along with the rest of the players, can’t wait to get going.”
Weaver, who made his 100th appearance for Bournville last season, is a much respected popular figure on and off the pitch at Avery Fields and plays an important role in the leadership group and ensuring that all sections of the club are fully engaged.
“James epitomises what the club is all about. He is a natural leader and, while he may not always be on the field, he will help lead us throughout the week,” said Price.
“He has the respect of us all and he is a great ambassador for the club.”
Weaver, who reached his century of appearances in the final match of last season against Hinckley at Avery Fields, joined Bournville from Moseley Oak midway through the 2017/18 season.
