Tell us a little bit about your business—what do you do, and how did you start?
I set up S J Financial Solutions in 2005, having been a mortgage advisor for the likes of Halifax and Santander as well as a small mortgage broker in Birmingham. I decided I wanted to set up a mortgage broker business where clients were at the heart of everything and results came from knowledge and not systems. Still to this day it so frustrating when a client comes to us and says they have been to their bank, and ‘the computer says NO’.. and that’s where we come in…
What makes your business stand out?
In a world where everything is on the internet, and people think that AI is the answer to all, we still have a very ‘face to face’ model. Sure, we can chat on Zooms and Teams etc, but what we really want is to get to know you as that helps us advise you. We love meeting our clients either at our office or place to suit and you cant get that with AI.
What’s an interesting fact about your company?
We have many clients from all walks of life, including TV chefs, professional sportsman and a world famous musician.
What’s your best piece of advice you can give our supporters, whether in business, life or rugby?
Training – this is important. If it is a cold damp day and you’re not quite feeling top of your game, training is probably not want you want to do. But turn up. You will most likely feel better; you’ll have improved your performance but more importantly you have turned up for the team and that deserves respect. In business, keeping in physical shape is obviously great, but again training. Making sure you are top of your field, both mentally and physically. As they say, every day is a school day.
What inspired you to support Bournville Rugby Club?
It is a fantastic facility and is amazing to see how well used it is by the local aspiring sportsman and women of the future. To be able to sponsor a little to allow the club to continue moving forward is amazing.
What can Bournville supporters and members do to support your business?

Finally, if your business was a rugby player, who would it be and why?
Jonny Wilkinson. The focus, mindset and determination to get results. We regularly have clients referred to us who have been to another mortgage broker and they couldn’t help. Its because the other broker couldn’t be bothered. Sometimes the easy route is not always the best route, but you got to work to get the results.
