Player Profile: Alex Grove

Meet Grovesy…

  • Position: Centre
  • Date of birth: November 30 1987
  • Height: 182cm (5ft 11ins)
  • Weight: 92kg (14st 5lbs)
  • Occupation: Property development
  • Previous clubs: Worcester Warriors, Edinburgh, Moseley, Coventry, Claverdon
  • Representative honours: Warwickshire Under-18s badminton squad. (And three caps for Scotland).
  • Rugby hero: My old man, aka The Colonel. A Midlands rugby legend (his words not mine).
  • Biggest influence on your rugby career: Phil Maynard. Over the years, and to quote David Brent, Phil “has created an atmosphere where he’s a friend first and boss second. Probably an entertainer third.”
  • Favourite rugby moment: Featuring in Claverdon RFC’s ‘Invincibles’ team of the 2021/22 season and winning Midlands Four West (South).
  • Most embarrassing moment on a rugby pitch: Conceding 26 unanswered second half points at home to Redruth is still fresh in the memory. That wasn’t great.
  • Which team-mate would you hate to be stuck in a lift with and why? Probably Phil Maynard because it would give him time to tell me all about (for circa the 5,000th time) how Bees beat Wasps in the Powergen Cup 20 years ago.
  • Favourite pre-match song: ‘Heroes’ by David Bowie popped up on my Spotify on the way to the ground last week. Decent tune.
  • Favourite post-match meal: Mixed kebab to start, followed by a Chicken Dhansak, Pilau rice, poppadoms etc.
  • Favourite rugby ground (apart from Avery Fields): Ossetts Hole Lane, home of Claverdon RFC.
