Jenkins to captain Bournville for first time

Centre Joe Jenkins will captain Bournville for the first time in Saturday’s National Two West match against Cinderford at Avery Fields (2.30pm).

The Wales Sevens international steps in as skipper as lock Ben Meakin has been ruled out of the match by an ear injury sustained against Luctonians two weeks ago.

Jenkins joined Bournville during the summer when his academic studies brought him to Birmingham on the latest leg of a rugby journey that has taken him from Brisbane to the United States, to Swansea and Edinburgh.

Jenkins will partner Rob Knox in the centre in a swap with Joe Nellany who has been named as a replacement.

Harry Dawson will also return to the starting XV on Saturday as Meakin’s replacement with Chad Thorne called up at tighthead prop as Stef Thorp took a knock at Luctonians.

Nathan Decalmer returns to the side on the right wing, having been a replacement last time out.

Cinderford will be first time visitors to Avery Fields having ended six years in National One with relegation last season.

They are currently fourth in the table, nine points adrift of leaders Camborne who they beat 43-24 at Dockham Road last week having drawn 29-29 at Hornets in their last away match.

Three of Cinderford’s seven wins have come away from home.

*Bournville Blues will face unbeaten Counties Three Midlands West (South) leaders Upton on Severn as part of the double-header at Avery Fields on Saturday (2.30pm).

Having suffered successive league defeats against Old Yardleians and Edwardians IIs, the Blues had to concede last week’s scheduled match at Hereford IIs after league officials ruled that a number of players who were selected for the match were ineligible having been involved in too many first XV matches.

Wing Ran Rundle will make his comeback from an ankle injury sustained against Hinckley last month in the centre with Jonjo Fanning, normally a back-row forward, selected at hooker.
