Bournville Forwards Coach CJ Osazuwa was delighted to be proved wrong by his players in Saturday’s Regional One Midlands top-of-the-table clash against Newport at Forton Road.
Bournville opted to play down the slope with a strong wind at their backs in the first-half but had just a three points lead at the interval which Osazuwa feared would not be enough.
But acting-captain Jacob Fewtrell reassured Osazuwa that the players had things under control and just needed to improve their discipline to secure a third successive away win. Fewtrell’s assessment proved accurate as Bourns eased to a 21-12 win against a side who started the day level with points with them at the start of the day.
“I thought we needed to go in at half-time with a lead of 15. I would have loved 25 or 30, but I just felt that 10 would not have been enough,” Osazuwa said.
“Obviously I was proven wrong but I don’t mind being proved wrong on days like this.
“You make a judgment when you look around the room at half-time. When I did that everyone seemed to be in a good place. Before I spoke Fewts whispered to me and said: we are in a really good place.
“Our discipline could have been better. We wanted territory, we wanted discipline, we wanted defence. Apart from discipline everything else was unbelievably good. So, at half-time I knew we were in a good place and the result proved it didn’t it?”
A try from wing Nathan Decalmer three minutes into the second-half proved significant with Fewtrell, who managed the game superbly at fly-half, landing two penalties and the whole team putting in a huge defensive shift to deny Newport a losing bonus point.
“Scott Rudge was great before he came off, Fewts managed the game beautifully, Joe Jenkins had real aggression, Ben Meakin hasn’t been with us for two weeks but his aggression levels were unbelievable,” Osazuwa said.
“But everyone stood up. Everyone was just unbelievably good.”
