Solihull School, with Bournville’s Alex Grove as part of their coaching team, will be defending their Covill Cup title against the King Edward VI Foundation Schools Barbarians under the Avery Fields floodlights on Friday January 17 (6.30pm).
Grove, the former Scotland and Worcester Warriors centre, has been combining his commitments as Bournville’s defence coach with his new role at Solihull this season.
He will be in a familiar position on the touchline at Avery Fields on Friday as Solihull take on a side selected from the best players from the schools in Birmingham’s King Edward’s Foundation.
The Covill Cup was inaugurated in 2022 and has quickly become a major feature on the local schools rugby calendar.
For the second successive year the match will also be a fund-raiser for the Matt Gallagher Foundation which was set up last year by the former Coventry, Birmingham & Solihull and Nottingham full-back.
Just over a year ago Matt Gallagher was diagnosed with the debilitating Motor Neurone Disease but he has responded in typically positive manner by setting up the foundation which aims to support those living with MND and their families.
Until recently Matt coached Solihull School who have organised a series of fund-raising events for the Matt Gallagher Foundation.
Friday’s Covill Cup match will be another of those with donations being accepted in cash or online before, during and after the game.
