Blues edged out in season finale

Bournville Blues rounded off their first season in Counties Two Midlands West (East) with a spirited performance in a 38-21 defeat by Berkswell & Balsall at Avery Fields.

Tries from captain Myles Hibbs, Ben Harper and a penalty try plus two conversions from Oscar Fawkes-Underwood were not quite enough to earn the Blues a bonus point against a strong Berkswell & Balsall side whose victory ensured that they finished as runners-up to champions Barkers’ Butts.

Having won promotion 12 months ago in their first-ever season in the RFU league pyramid, the Blues finished in a creditable ninth place, one point behind Lutterworth IIs.

In the first match of the day Bournville Under-35s retained the Panda Cup with a 37-24 victory over the Over-35s, the Hippos.

The cup was inaugurated last year in memory of Dave ‘Panda’ Vickers who died died during the Covid-19 pandemic in 2020.

Once again youth triumphed over experience in an entertaining contest featuring some of the great, the good – and the not so good – from the club’s recent past.
