Bailey on the comeback trail

Hooker Jake Bailey could be in contention for a return to action for Bournville in their National Two West Midlands derby against Hinckley at Leicester Road on March 1.

Bailey has been out of action with an ankle injury since Bournville beat Hinckley at Avery Fields in late October but is close to a return to action.

His availability would be a welcome boost for Bournville with Ben Rhodes ruled out for the rest of the season by a torn biceps and James Weaver having suffered a rib injury at Camborne last week.

Bourns will check on Weaver’s fitness in the week but openside flanker Adam Shaw is a doubt after he sustained a rotator cuff injury last week.

Number eight Jasper Smith and full-back Freddie Morgan will also be back in contention having been unavailable to travel to Camborne.

Although Bournville’s players have had a week off from league action, back-row forward Jonjo Fanning has kept busy by playing for the Penguins in their 38-24 defeat against Oxford University at Iffley Road on Wednesday night.

Fanning started for the invitation club in Oxford’s final match before they face Cambridge in the Varsity Match next month.

Bournville were one of 14 clubs represented in the Penguins squad with players from seven different countries.

Fanning is the fifth Bournville player to appear for the Penguins this season after Weaver, skipper Ben Meakin, centre Sam Grimshaw and wing Nathan Decalmer who started against Cambridge University at Grange Road in November.
